Portugal/ Family

Today we went to another grocery store.  It’s only for people who have worked at this certain car company, so you need a card to shop there.  I guess Gael’s grandpa worked there so his sister has the card.  Everything in there was really cheap!  We bought different lunch meat there.  It was really good!

After we went to a market in Portugal.  It was a little less than an hour from Gael’s house.  There were tons of clothes, purses, shoes, just things like that!  I tried on some shoes and they were either too small or too big.  I think it’s because the shoes are made very cheap, but there were some cute things.  I didn’t buy anything..lol I was a little overwhelmed with all of the things, and you’re right dad it is hard to find things for people :p  I tried churros from there, which were delicious!  I also tried homemade donuts, butter bread, and this pastry(pasteis de belem) that is only in Portugal.  It was all really good!!  In the market there was this building with fruits and veggies, but there was also fish.  It smelled soooo bad!! I could only stay in there for a little 😉  It was cool because the market was on water and across the water was Spain!  It’s amazing how you can cross a bridge and be in a different country.

After we left Portugal we went to this bar to meet some of his cousins, aunts and uncles.  They were all really nice and welcoming.  We played foosball and darts.  I WON darts!! I was so surprised, and yes Gael was playing ;P  I think it was just luck though.haha  After that we went to dinner at this place called Gigantes.  They were famous for their burgers.  Its a thin patty, but HUGE!  Gael got the biggest one, so I will post pictures soon!  Finally, we went to this really nice coffee cafe with Gaels family.  I got vanilla tea.  It was good.  There were a lot of different coffee drinks, and it came with a cookie too!  I will bring a few home for everyone to try!  They also gave you a little cup of candy, it was delicious! 🙂  Another busy day!  Hopefully I don’t wake up at 12pm again… ;P

Thursday evening Gael, me, and his sister walked around the city a bit.  It is very beautiful!  There’s more apartments than houses here.  I don’t think I’ve even seen one house.lol  There are also no parking garages.  All of the parking is on the street or underground, which I thought was interesting.  There’s also a lot of mountains.  That is something I am enjoying due to the lack of mountains in Florida and Illinois. :p Later in the evening we went to the grocery store.  This is for you mom.. There was no organic section. :p  They don’t really have peanut butter, or a lot of different loafs of bread like in the US.  Theres a ton of cheese too!  So far Ive had fish you had to take all the bones out of, calamari that isn’t sliced, pork spread that you put on toast(Gael’s favorite), spanish peppers, really delicious spanish omelet, and other random things.  Here you eat a little in the morning,  a big meal around 2:00, a snack around 6:00, and then dinner at 10:00 at night!  It’s definitely different than the 7:00 dinner I’m used to!

Yesterday I woke up around 12:45 pm.  I’ve been so tired because I haven’t gotten used to the time change!  We ate lunch, and then Gael, his sister, his best friend, and I went to the mall to exchange Gael’s luggage because the airport ruined it.  His sister Ana also took me in the store with really cute clothes.  Jessica, they have this jacket that is the pretty aqua blue that I like that we see on interest all the time! 🙂  I can’t wait to go back and get a few things!  Then we picked up Ana’s husband Diego and went to a different city about an hour away.  We walked around and had sangria with a sample size spanish omelet, croqueta, and ham and cheese on a slice of bread.

After, we went to this natural hot spring.  It’s called Termas de Outariz.  They are kind of like hot tubs, but with this spring water that is naturally hot!  You had a mountain view also.  It was really cool and relaxing!!  It was 12:30 pm when we left so nothing was open to eat, so we went to McDonalds.  A lot of the things were the same, but also some different things.  There were chicken wings, donuts, muffins, and potato skins!

It’s been really cool seeing all the different things!  Today we are going to a market in Portugal.  I’m going to meet all of his cousins, aunts and uncles today too!  OH!  Also, Ana made me play a game Thursday night.  She gave me a bag full of cut up paper and each one had a spanish name on it.  I had to tape the word to the correct thing in the house.  Once I was finished she gave me some candy 😛  They are really nice and very helpful!  I’m still really shy with speaking spanish, but I’m becoming more comfortable each day.  I miss everyone at home, hope you all are doing good!  XOXO

Travel/ First Day In Spain

Yesterday was the longest day of my life.. My first flight started off with this lady who wouldn’t move to the aisle seat next to Gael and I so that this father could sit with his 2 children.  She was supposed to have the window seat on the other side, and the father even showed her his ticket but she didn’t want to move, so it was his 2 children, the lady, the father, gael and then me.  I would have told a flight attendant, but I guess he didn’t want to cause any issues.  She made me so furious because moving would be the polite thing to do!

The 7 hour layover in New York actually went by pretty fast.  I had an interesting experience with the food there.  Gael got chinese food that cost $12 and it tasted so bad!  Then I wanted a drink from Starbucks and they made it with expresso instead of normal coffee, so I gave it to Gael because I wanted to be able to sleep on the plane!  Since I gave the Starbucks to Gael, I went to get a smoothie and it ended up tasting like straight sugar, so I barely drank it.  Then for dinner we went to a sit down restaurant and I wanted to get a salad with chicken and it cost $7 to add chicken to the salad!! haha We both ended up sharing the salad WITHOUT chicken and then got oatmeal from McDonalds! :p  So in simpler words, i’m not eating a lot at an airport again. lol

The flight to Madrid was really long but I tried to sleep a bit.  The Madrid airport is huge!  I felt like a walking zombie because I was so tired.  We arrived in Vigo around 1:30pm (spain time) and then went to meet his sister and her husband.  We all went to eat at gaels grandpas house and we have chicken, spanish omelet, and salad.  It was really good!  The streets and houses are different than the US, but it is very pretty!  We are going to leave soon and walk around some, so Gael and I don’t fall asleep! lol I’m really excited to see all the little coffee shops! 🙂  So far so good, AND no tears yet :p

The day before..

It is the day before I leave for Europe and I am so nervous, but also excited at the same time.  For those of you who don’t know, I am going to Spain, Paris, Norway, and possibly London with my boyfriend Gael.  He is from Spain and Norway so I am going to meet his whole family for the first time.  His mom, dad, little brother and sister live in Oslo Norway, and his sister and her husband, along with other family members live in Vigo, Spain.

Gael has his whole suitcase packed and all my clothes are thrown all over my bed. lol I’m having a hard time deciding what to wear on the plane… I really just want to wear sweat pants, but I will be meeting some of his family right when I get off the plane so I want to make a good impression.  Just too much to think about! haha

I am going to miss my family and friends so much! I have never been outside of the country before so I am really nervous.  If you know me, you know that I sometimes cry if I feel out of place or am homesick, so my parents have already bet $300 that I am going to cry while I’m gone..haha It’s giving me motivation not to cry 😛

Well I think this is all for today.  My flight leaves at 11:15 tomorrow morning. Ahhh 🙂
